Throughout planning, developing and creating our music video, we have continually looked into and researched the forms and conventions of music videos with different genres and also one or two with the same genre as the song we have chosen to make a video for. We have looked at what is typically held within a ‘pop’ genre music video, and across the ones which we have looked at, they all seem to contain some similar features. Many of which obtain a main narrative throughout the music video, guiding the audience through what is happening on screen. Predominantly they are all relating to the soundtrack which accompanies the video as it is happening. We did not go into this task with the intension of wanting to convey with the forms and conventions of a typical pop/punk music video genre. Although, after researching into the forms and conventions of this genre more and more we found that what we had planned to do within our own music video would possibly convey with the forms which we had found very common. This being within the video, there is a narrative, which tells the story of the song, of the artist is featured performing in the video. Not wanting someone miming within our video; however we did have a main narrative running alongside the song lyrics throughout our video, we have conveyed to the forms and conventions of this style of music video.
In spite of this we didn’t initially want to convey with this, we hoped for our video to be quite individual and different. The editing was done in such a way so that it was continually cut to the beat of the music, with fast flashing clips, many of which were close up shots, as this song is quite emotional and the emotional pain of a person is more often than not shown throughout their body language and facial expressions. When editing I cut it into different scenes, for the verse’s where it was the main character in the woods breaking down as an emotional wreck, however each time these scenes changed slightly( from her being in the woods/ to her running away/ being in the bathroom showing her reflection in the mirrors - suggesting how vanity can affect people in today’s society), which contrasted with the chorus of the song where there was a party going on, the chorus scene was repeated during all three chorus’s which are in this song.
As we did not wish to lose the audience’s attention in any part of our music video, when editing I made the shots cut to the beat of the music, frequently using many quick flashing slips in-between the longer clips which were put in the video, I also used a lot of quick cut editing techniques persistently keeping the audience at grasp, this is something that is often found in many music videos, making them the success which they become as the audience have been drawn to the slickness of the video.
I do believe in some way we have challenged the forms and conventions of real media products, for example with our choice of location for the filming, two very diverse and contrasting scenes, one in the woods where one character is seen distressed, breaking down in to some form of wreckage with just natural light used here, and naturalistic settings, whilst on the other hand, a party with lots of artificial flashing lighting and many people in the scene. With the choice of our mise-en-scene, costumes and make up I believe it is quite individual which is what we originally wanted.
Within our ancillary tasks I think they have employed the forms and conventions of real media products as the CD Album Cover and the Advertising Poster both link together by the text used, which is often seen within artists, for example, The Killers, you can recognise them for the type of text and font they use on their posters and CD album covers. Conveying to this we used the same text on both pieces, to give the audience more awareness of the artist and song, which is an advertising strategy as it can be easily recognised by our target audience, which in industries would be used to promote the artist.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Below is a variation of feedback which we received from our audience.
Kimmie202- Hiyya girlies, this is well good! The track choice fits really well with the editing and the genre of the song works especially well with the style of the music video. I liked the fact that you shot it in the woods, this gave it a certain atmospheric feel, and you could really tell that girl was distressed about something. xx
H.Loueese46 –
Didn’t fully understand the storyline of this, but the editing was amazing, well cut to the beat, and that make up was well cool.
J.Scott234 –
Liked the contrast within this video, the two different scenes worked well together, and liked how you changed the lighting and tempo from one scene to the other. Good job guys!
Fuch.S4885 –
Loved your video, the editing was cut very well to the beat of the song, especially when it lead up to the chorus, when it had that big drum beat! When is your next video coming out?! x
Samsam083- I didn’t understand why there was a girl running through the forest, but I liked the editing.
TipsoT –
Liked this - the costume was well cool, love the corset and tutu’s, as well as the theatrical make-up. Was well edited in time with the song too.
Lysh01 – I thought this was skillfully done, this particular genre of music needs a certain approach in a video and I think you two dealt with this well x
E.S66 – Fast editing was epic, setting works really well, good overall!
Loz.G – Hey you guys! Loved your video, good song choice as it works well with what is happening on the screen.
We received quite a few comments on our music video and overall we were very pleases with the audience feedback we received. One of the main things that was mentioned several, was not a full understanding of the story line to our video, (i.e. the main female character, shown running through the woods in distress).
We learnt that audience highly approved of our editing skills throughout the video and we did well to cut all of the shots in time of the beat to the music. Another thing that people commented on was our choice of mise’-en-Scene, the location we filmed in, our idiosyncratic costumes and dramatic make-up. One of the points that was made by a viewer was that the genre of the song and nature of the lyrics fitted to the video well, which was really good to hear as this is one of the main challenged I feel we had throughout producing the music video. If we had change to do this again a second time around, I feel we would make the main story line clearer as a few from our target audience had said that wasn’t fully understood for them, and we would possibly get feedback continually as we were in the process of making the video instead of it all after, so that we could possibly make changes when the audience felt they were needed.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?
Throughout the construction research planning and evaluation stages of my music video I have continually used new media technologies. The internet became a primary foundation of where I collected a lot of my information using websites such as Google (which is a massive worldwide search engine) helping me to research and learn more about the forms and conventions of music videos as a whole, and the different genres and sub-genres, also I used YouTube (a social networking and video sharing website) a great deal of times to view music videos with the same pop/punk genre as my chosen song, also to watch interviews which my chosen band have previously done. Also before I had chose my song which I was going to create a music video to, I listed to the music channels on Sky TV very often and Radio1, gathering a greater idea of what music is in the charts and what artists are popular or not so popular at that moment in time.
When researching and producing my music video I would repeatedly use Microsoft Word to type up research, my ideas and plans for the overall piece, and I used this soft ware throughout saving every piece of work I did even if it wasn’t totally necessary I wanted to keep it for the future, when I create my blog as I could simply just copy and paste the work I had previously done onto my blog site.
For the planning stages we used all the camera equipment which we filmed our music video with, and for the editing of my music video I used the software iMovie on an Apple Mac laptop. I also edited the song track which we used on this iMovie software. When producing the Album cover and Poster for the promotional package which went with the music video these were both created on a photo adaptation software, with use of the internet again to find the text which we used on both of these.
Within the evaluation stages of the overall production the use of new media technology had been used throughout the advertisement of our finished music video through use of the internet once again and use of websites such as Facebook, Myspace and DailyMotion, where we also received our audience feedback.

How effective is the combination of my main product and ancillary texts?
We think that in the main, the combination of what we have produced overall works exceptionally as a package. We have aimed to create everything in the same style so as to keep all of the elements of the final product interlinked with each other and have clear-cut genre that our audience will recognise and hopefully appreciate.
The Video includes a vast amount of exceptionally quick cutting scenes that all represent what is happening in the main female characters mind. I think a fairly sizable aspect where we have shown and represented in our product is in our poster. It consists of lots of separate strips and sections of abstract images that we, ourselves tore out a glossy magazines and pieced together to create the final image. We did this because we wanted ours to be entirely different and unique to all others, so I think this worked very effectively for us as we were very pleased with the outcome.
We also designed a CD cover for the album of which the song is from. For this we decided to take a screen shot of the actual video (whilst editing) and transfer this image in good quality to a photo editing programme on the computer. We edited the picture to improve the quality of colour so that it appeared to be more vibrant.
We also thought it would look good if we flipped the image over so that, on what would be the back of the cover there would be a mirrored image of the girl on the front. We chose to use chiaroscuro lighting for this as this suggests possibly a mystery and a concealed side of her personality. We wanted this to represent how she feels so isolated and stuck almost in a world of her own, hence she only sees herself – the mirrored image.
The picture itself is a shot taken from above of the main female character sitting beneath a tree, crouched down in a weak, defenceless and vulnerable manner, this is to again, symbolise how she feels and make the audience aware of her emotionally.
Another aspect of our products that we particularly think highlights how effective they are among together, is within the video. We have tried to cut the clips shown to the exact description of what is being said to be happening in the lyrics.
As the song progresses the tempo of the music fits with how fast or slow the clips are and how many of them are seen. On the peak of the chorus, the lyrics ‘This is how we’ll dance when, when they try to take us down, this is what we’ll be, oh glory…’ are heard and at this point the video quickly cuts to show the scene where the people are outrageously dancing at a party. We have edited this certain part of the video in such a way that the focus blurs and changes speed therefore representing how the people at the party feel (I.e. effects of intoxication with drugs/alcohol).
A huge amount of the shots that are shown in the video are of the main female character looking to be distressed and upset. This is another as to why we chose to design our CD cover in the way that we did as it’s almost as if we have taken an element of the video and transformed it to make it appropriate for the album.
The music video, CD cover and poster have all been successful as they incorporate well with one another, obtaining the same atmosphere and mode throughout, as all three elements of our product fit together and suit the pop-punk genre of the song.
